Meet Lucretia Williams, Distinct Event Planning, LLC

Tell us about your business:

Distinct Event Planning LLC, incorporated in 1998 and headquartered in Columbus, OH, is a full-service event planning and design company with a global footprint, catering to corporations, associations, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. Through virtual, hybrid, and in-person events, we craft uniquely engaging and culturally inclusive experiences that consistently surpass client goals and objectives. From events, themed luncheons and galas to retreats, corporate conferences, and intimate corporate functions, we deliver signature moments that are on target, within budget, and fully aligned with our clients’ expectations.

What inspired you to get into your business?

Starting my business stemmed from a desire to embrace my God-given talents and skills to build a career rooted in my passion for event planning. I wanted to create a space where I could take ownership of my future and become an expert in my field, offering tailored, high-quality experiences to clients. My thought process revolved around gaining independence, developing a strong foundation for success, and channeling my creativity into a business that reflects my values. By carefully considering the risks and rewards, and with a clear vision of my goals, I structured my business to thrive in an evolving industry while maintaining a strong focus on client satisfaction and personal growth.

Why did you join NAWBO?

I joined NAWBO to connect with like-minded women entrepreneurs, access resources to help grow my business, and advocate for women’s leadership in business. I love connecting with seasoned entrepreneurs who can provide guidance, share experiences, and help navigate challenges unique to women in business. Being part of a national network of ambitious, supportive women fosters camaraderie and a shared sense of purpose fosters a sense of community. Doing business with women is my jam!

What is the most important lesson you learned or advice you were given as a business owner?

One of the most important lessons I’ve learned, which many business owners echo, is the value of resilience—understanding that setbacks are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines your success. Business is a rollercoaster, and developing the mindset to see challenges as opportunities to adapt and grow can keep you moving forward, even in tough times.

As for advice, one piece that resonates deeply is: “Focus on relationships, not just transactions.” Building genuine, lasting connections with clients, collaborators, and your community creates trust and loyalty that can carry your business far beyond what any short-term gain could achieve.

What is your favorite motivational quote?

“Success is not final, failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.” – Winston Churchill

It’s a powerful reminder to stay humble in success, resilient in failure, and always keep pushing forward.
