Did you know that there are more than 11.6 million women-owned businesses that employ over 9 million people and generate $1.7 trillion in sales? Back in 1972, there were only 400,000 women-owned business in the United States. This astronomical increase is because women today are starting businesses at an incredible pace. To put it in perspective, women-owned businesses have increased over 31 times since the government started tracking it in 1972. Today, women own 4 out of every 10 businesses and it is an immense milestone that we need to be celebrating.
We’ve grown in unbelievable ways. Consider that in 1988 women could not receive their own financing without providing a signature from a male relative. Women overcame that obstacle and gained control of their finances by building networks and actively supporting organizations like NAWBO as well as working with government leaders to pass the infamous bill known as HR5050.
By finding the right supportive network, women changed the landscape of entrepreneurship. But our work is not finished. We need to continue to build this organization to operate for all who are involved. It is our responsibility to elect officials that support women’s needs and will pass bills to give us more access to capital.
I invite you to join us on September 5thfor our public policy meeting. This is a great opportunity to be updated on policies affecting our community. A panel consisting of the best public and private sector businesses will share how they benefit from the work of NAWBO to change government policy. When we unite as a community, we impact legislation.
